July 2007

The Capitals are the WTT Champions!!! They defeated the Buzz 24-20 in a tightly contested match! The Caps won the first four sets and all four were close. The Buzz were able to win the 5th set and force overtime but Mark and Sam Warburg finished them off in the first game to clinch the victory. This is the Caps first title since 2002! If anyone sees Mark the rest of the year, be sure to congratulate him on winning the WTT Title with the Caps, as well as earning Male MVP!

Mark was named the 2007 Male MVP for WTT before the start of the Western Conference Finals!!! Congratulations Mark on this achievement and it was certainly well deserved.

Mark and the Sacramento Capitals are the Western Conference Champions!!! They defeated the top seeded Springfield Lasers 23-17! The Caps won 4 out of the 5 sets played and Mark won both of the ones he participated in. The team will now play for the WTT Championship on Sunday, July 29th in Sacramento! They will face either the New York Buzz or the Philadelphia Freedoms who play for the Eastern Conference Title tomorrow.

From the WTT site.

“Playing at home was great, especially against the best team in the League,” said Knowles. “We had a great crowd and they really pushed us through it. Men’s doubles got us off to a good start and Sam backed it up in men’s singles. It was a great night for the Caps.”

The Caps are going to the conference finals!!! Woooo hoooo! They defeated the KC Explorers 21-17 but it wasn’t easy. Elena Likhovtseva was down 1-2 and was broken and it was 17-17. She stormed back to take the next 4 games and ultimately clinch the win for the Caps. Mark and Sam Warburg won the men’s doubles 5-2 which made Mark the #1 player in that category for best winning percentage! He also finished in 2nd place in the mixed doubles category for winning percentage. Hats off to Mark! The Caps will face the Lasers in Sacramento for the conference title on July 27th or 28th. Lets go Caps!!!

The Caps defeated the previous unbeaten Springfield Lasers 22-17 to stay ahead of the KC Explorers for 2nd place in their division! Mark won both of his doubles sets. The Caps basically need to beat the Explorers tonight because they are only one point ahead of them in the tiebreaker, which is total games won against a respective opponent. Winning the match outright would be the easiest way to clinch a spot in the conference final. GO CAPS!!!

Mark and the Caps lost for the first time with Mark and Elena Likhovtseva in the lineup to none other than the Philadelphia Freedoms, the team that Mark’s longtime partner Daniel Nestor plays for! The Caps fell 23-17 to the Freedoms and Mark lost in both of the sets he played in for the first time this year. The Caps look to clinch the victory over the 1st place team, the Springfield Lasers, who have yet to lose this year and need a win to stay a win ahead of the Kansas City Explorers. Lindsay Davenport joins Mark and the Capitals en route to their 9th straight victory! The Caps are now 9-2 and are currently in 2nd place in their division. They will get another shot at the leaders, the Springfield Lasers, on July 24th in Springfield and this time the Caps won’t be shorthanded. They defeated the Newport Beach Breakers 23-13 to earn their 9th win in a row. Thanks to Steve Clapper for sending in some photos of the match. I put one here as well as a couple more in his wonderful section on the gallery page. And a thank you to the Caps official photographer, Bill Putnam, for not only sending in shots from Mark playing with Lindsay but tons of other pictures of Mark in action! His photos can now be viewed on the gallery page. In addition, terrific Mark fans Kathy Clegg and Joyce Royle sent in fantastic photos from Wimbledon which have been added to their respective areas. And lastly, the webmaster of Mark and Daniel’s first fan site Betty kindly sent in a few pictures from Wimbledon as well. Thanks so much to everyone!

The Sacramento Captials won their 5th match in a row after defeating the New York Buzz 18-16. Sam Warburg finished off the comeback winning 5-1 in the final set to clinch the victory. The winning streak started when Mark returned from Wimbledon and played his first match in Houston. Looks like Mark may very well be on his way to another MVP award. Here is the reason why. He has only dropped a single set in WTT competition in both men’s doubles and mixed doubles! Mark is among the league leaders in winning percentage in men’s doubles and mixed doubles. Statistics and information can be found at the WTT site, http://www.wtt.com The Caps return home on July 18th after a two match road trip.

Mark’s WTT Team the Sacramento Capitals defeated the Houston Wranglers on Sunday July 8th thanks in large part to Mark making an appearence and winning 5-0 in the mixed doubles with Anna Kournikova and 5-3 in the men’s doubles with Sam Warburg!!! Here are some exclusive photos from the wonderful Beverly Balowsky, who has provided breath-taking photos of Mark in the past. Enjoy and please do not use this without permission from Beverly. You would need to email me first to see if she would allow them to be used. There is now a picture with the entire Knowles family. I am so happy Beverly was able to get one with Mark’s lovely wife Dawn and their adorable son Graham. And last but not least, their son Graham took an adorable picture with Ms. Kournikova. Enjoy.

Mark and Daniel lost in the quarterfinals to Brazlian duo Melo/Sa in three sets. The score was 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 in favor of the Brazlians. :(

Mark has been chosen to do a blog at Wimbledon for The Tennis Channel! You can read about his days at the All England Club at this link: http://www.thetennischannel.com/wimbledon/knowles_blog.aspx

Mark and Daniel are seeded 3rd at Wimbledon and are on the same half of the draw as Bjorkman/Mirnyi, who they defeated in the Queens semifinals.
